This year, Hunter Trade College reeled in the Berkley team for a true learning feeding frenzy. During Term 4, students in Computing Applications got hands-on with Fusion360, building core skills in digital design and software focused on 3D modelling and manufacturing. The program gives these emerging tradespeople a valuable look at how technical skills can open unexpected doors as they move beyond school and into their careers.
To kick off the term, HTC welcomed Berkley to a toolbox session where lead brand manager—and lifelong fishing fanatic—Mark Phillips walked students through the realities of lure design. From what fish can’t resist, to how they find their food. Students gained first-hand insight into the Berkley process, tracing a lure’s journey from early concept right through to finished product.
Armed with this knowledge, students were challenged to ideate, design, and produce 3D renders of their very own lure. Along the way, they had to think like both an angler and a designer—considering colour, swim action, diving depth, and target species to bring their concepts to life.
With guidance from the Berkley team, students submitted their designs for judging. The stakes? More than just bragging rights. The winning lure would take home a Berkley prize pack—fuel for their passion on the water.
Engagement throughout the project was outstanding, with many students blending their passion for fishing with their growing technical skills. It was clear that the next generation of anglers share the same curiosity, drive, and love for the water that’s long defined Berkley.
To wrap up the 2025 Lure Design Competition, Berkley joined HTC on presentation day to announce the winner. Patrick Hutchinson took out the top honour, receiving the CAD to Cast Award for a design that showed strong attention to detail and a clear, market-ready approach.
Collaborations like this give Berkley the chance to connect with young anglers in meaningful ways—sharing knowledge, opening pathways, and inspiring students to follow what genuinely excites them.
From all of us at Berkley, thank you to Hunter Trade College for the opportunity. We’re already looking forward to seeing what the next class brings to the table in the 2026 Lure Design Competition.
